Toyota's Plug-In Prius On Display

Prius lovers can now witness Toyota’s latest innovative hybrid vehicle! Toyota will display a prototype plug-in Prius hybrid at Legislative Plaza today during a field hearing on electric drive vehicles named for by the Congressional TVA Caucus. The model Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) develops the elevated fuel economy and ultra-low emissions of the world-renowned Toyota Prius production hybrid model. It will surface with a developed Nickel-Metal-Hydride battery pack that can be charged by plugging into a usual house electrical outlet. The Prius plug-in can operate in pure-electric manner for extended periods of time and at speeds up to 60 mph with added electric reserved power.

By 2010, Toyota will have its next generation plug-in hybrid with Lithium-Ion batteries being tested by commercial fleets in the U.S. and elsewhere. With over 1.5 million hybrid sales worldwide, Toyota is the established leader in hybrid technology.

"As we look ahead, we believe hybrids will continue to raise the bar for new technology. Plug-in hybrids can offer substantial gains in fuel economy and a reduction in total tailpipe emissions," explains Robert Wimmer, Toyota's national manager for Technical and Regulatory Affairs, Energy & Environmental Research.

"When considering the benefit of new technologies, we must understand the relationship between large sales volumes and fuel savings. For example, if we double sales of a hybrid model, the fuel savings is greater than doubling its fuel economy with no change in sales volume. Therefore, it is critical that new technologies, such as plug-ins and fuel cells are introduced at a price point and utility that allow for high volume sales. Otherwise, their environmental benefit will be negligible," Wimmer added.

Toyota Awards $1 Million In Scholarships

100 lucky high-school seniors will benefit from a gift worth $1 million in scholarships courtesy of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A Inc. It was reported that the U.S. based Toyota group rewarded 100 high school seniors with $1 million in college scholarships for their dedication to education and public service at an awards dinner last week, May 9, 2008.

The lucky recipients, who make up the 12th class of Toyota Community Scholars, were selected from a group of over 8,000 students nationwide voted by their respective schools. Students should be proven leaders both in the campus and outside the four corners of their classrooms. The 2008 class was taught at an untimely period that "giving back" to the community was not an obligation, but, rather, a way of life according to the Auto Channel.

"When helping others, an incredible feeling is instilled in your veins. This feeling allows you to believe you have meaning in the world," explains one of the scholars, Jacob Rouse of Union, Ky.

For this year’s batch, their aspirations of making a difference has become a reality through programs varying from lifting $120,000 for the American Cancer Society to collecting over 3,000 pounds of food supplies that was delivered to teenagers at over 160 schools

"It is truly amazing to see what these 100 high school seniors have accomplished at such a young age. Their dedication both to academics and community service is an inspiration to all of us," says Michael Rouse, TMS corporate manager of philanthropy and community affairs.

Toyota's Year-End Financial Results

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) already announced operating results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2008. Net revenues for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2008 totaled 26.29 trillion yen, an increase of 9.8 percent compared to the last fiscal year on a combined basis.

"For this fiscal year, we posted our highest ever results in both revenue and profits. There are two key points for these results. First, our profit structure has become more geographically balanced, with growing contribution from resource-rich countries and emerging countries. We believe our growth strategy of utilizing every opportunity across the full product line-up and in all regions have shown strong results. Second, net income has steadily increased due to the growth of operating profit from global operations and equity in earnings of affiliated companies. Growth of equity in earnings has been particularly strong and has more than doubled over the last four years, mainly due to the rapid growth of Chinese operations," says TMC President Katsuaki Watanabe.

Here are the full results provided by the Auto Spectator:

Operating income increased 1.4 percent to 2.27 trillion yen, and income before income tax, minority interest and equity in earnings of affiliated companies was 2.44 trillion yen. Net income increased 4.5 percent to 1.72 trillion yen. All of these figures marked record results.

Operating income increased by 31.7 billion yen to 2.27 trillion yen, due to positive contributions of 290.0 billion yen from marketing efforts and 120.0 billion yen from cost reduction efforts, and negative factors including 48.1 billion yen of valuation losses on interest rate swaps.

Excluding this 48.1 billion yen, operating income on a non-USGAAP basis increased substantially by 79.8 billion yen to 2.34 trillion yen. Equity in earnings of affiliated companies increased by 60.6 billion yen to 270.1 billion yen, due to strong results of joint venture companies in China.

iQ Microcar Is Coming

Prepare. iQ is coming…

Toyota said it will be introducing a cutting-edge microcar dubbed iQ. The revelation will happen next month at the Geneva Auto Show.

I do hope, just like the rest of the Americans, that the iQ will hit our soil. One sweet car is enough to wow me.

London Free Press writes:

The lilliputian runabout measures just under 10 feet long, but it's about as wide and tall as the Toyota Yaris and can carry four people thanks to an innovative interior layout. There's no word on just what it'll have under the hood - Autoblog Green guesses a 1-liter engine - or what the production version will look like, but we hope Toyota sticks with the conceptual design Car Magazine deemed the best concept of 2007 and "the most significant small car since the original Smart City Coupe back in 1997.”

Car Magazine noted: “Small cars are a designer's nightmare. Budgets are tight, space is tight and there aren't a whole lot of options when it comes to drivetrains.”

The automotive industry is proving its might to the whole world that it has the prowess to overcome obstacles. Take Fiat 500. The car is a nice example to take. But Toyota is poised to deliver a mighty rival with the introduction of the iQ. Everything about the iQ, from the dashboard to gas tank placement, was engineered to make the most of the interior room. What’s more, the features of the microcar make the iQ larger than it seems.

I am excited to see microcars on American roads. And I hope I can purchase one microcar to satisfy my craving. I’d love to stroll around the city with just a companion or two inside say an iQ.

South Africa Automotive Customer Satisfaction Index Study

The results are out, and once again, Toyota took charge in the latest South Africa Automotive Customer Satisfaction Index Study! Toyota and Honda models notched four segment honors each. According to the latest J.D. Power and Associates/CAR Magazine 2007 South Africa Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Study(SM), both earned more awards than any other auto manufacturer.

“Honda and Toyota models continue their strong performance in satisfying customers in South Africa," said Brian Walters, the vice president of J.D. Power and Associates Europe Middle East and Africa operations. "In both 2006 and 2007, four Toyota models ranked highest in their respective segments, while Honda has led in nameplate rankings in both years. These results are a testament to the commitment to high quality that both brands demonstrate. In addition, Mercedes-Benz maintains its ranking in the top five for a second consecutive year and improves in an impressive manner since 2006."

According to the Auto Channel, CR-V, Civic, FR-V and Jazz were the Honda models that earned the highest honors. On the other hand, Toyota's Avensis, Hilux, Land Cruiser Prado and Tazz are the highest ranked models in their particular segments.

"The consistent improvement in overall satisfaction in the South Africa market is good news for consumers, franchised dealers and manufacturers," said Walters. "However, there is still significant room for improvement. While customers seem to be more satisfied with vehicle quality and reliability as well as vehicle appeal, service satisfaction and ownership cost satisfaction levels are not on par."

"We are pleased to publish the latest independent J.D. Power and Associates South Africa CSI research findings, covering the overall vehicle ownership experience," said John Bentley, the editor of CAR Magazine. "These findings provide our readers with quantified information from current owners, further assisting them with their vehicle purchase decisions."

Lexus LF-A Sets New Ring Record

Lexus has once again showed the world that it deserves to be ranked with the high performance European sports cars after setting a lap record time of 7 minutes and 24 seconds at Nurburgring and in the process beating the set record time of Pagani Zonda F with 7 minutes and 27 seconds. The all-new Porsche 911 GT2’s record which according to AutoBild was 7:32 while AutoExpress reported 7:25 was also slashed. For years the German Nurburgring has been used to measure the performance of sports car and now with the coming of Japanese sports cars European automakers are feeling the heat. Nissan and Lexus has started offering their GT-R and LF-A sports cars to go head-to-head with European sports cars. Last September, the Nissan GT-R lapped the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 38 seconds close to beating the time set by the Porsche 997 GT3. Honda is also reported to be working on a 5.0 liter V10 powered NSX---something for us to watch out for.

Toyota Motor Corporation Targets 1 Million Hybrid Vehicles Annually

Toyota Motor Corporation with its Prius has popularized the hybrid technology but for the coming New Year, the automaker has set a slightly higher projection by selling a million hybrid cars every year after 2010.

Despite the fact that Toyota is not the first automaker to offer hybrid vehicle, it was the most aggressive promoter of such technology. The hybrid Prius was able to sell around 1.25 million units since its introduction in 1997.

Toyota is also thinking of hitting sales of one million per year. With the present prices of fuel it’s not inconceivable that Toyota will hit its million sales goals. The automaker has also announced that it plans to equip each of its vehicle with a hybrid drivetrain comes 2020. However the internal combustion is not yet perfected which means that it will take a while before Toyota can finally implement its plan of equipping all of its vehicles with a hybrid drivetrain.

Toyota Improving Production Facilities

Toyota Motor Corporation has recently started the production of the Camry at its facility in Shushary district in St. Petersburg, Russia. This facility was established in Russia in May 2005. Its initial annual production capacity is 50,000 vehicles with the first full-year production set at 20,000 units. The total investment of Toyota in the plant reached $200 million.

According to Katsuaki Watanabe, President of Toyota, "The reason we have been able to successfully commence production is that a team made up of Russians and Japanese had the enthusiasm to clear numerous obstacles and overcome adversity."

And speaking of Toyota plant, the automaker is planning to build an environmentally-friendly plant in Blue Springs by 2010 that is basing on the news release from Gov. Haley Barbour’s office.

It was on Christmas day that Toyota announced the designation of four production subsidiaries that will serve as model plants for carrying out “sustainable plant” activities with nature as the core theme.

Toyota has three objectives and these are:

• Achieving groundbreaking environmental performance by introducing innovative technology and kaizen (improvement) activities.
• Reducing CO2 by using renewable energy, including biomass and natural energy sources, such as solar power and wind power.
• Contributing to the local community and conserving the environment by planting trees.

The Blue Springs plant will join other environmentally-friendly plants of Toyota in Japan, United Kingdom, France, and Thailand.
